Hard Rubbish Yarra Ranges: Bookings, Items and Disposal

Yarra Ranges uses an annual address-based hard-rubbish round. Its sorting instructions separate five recycling streams, but the published volume allowances are grouped into three categories.

Rules and charges checked 14 October 2026. Local Skip Bins Melbourne is an independent referral service, not affiliated with Yarra Ranges council or its collection contractor. Book council hard rubbish through the Yarra Ranges council collection route. This page’s quote form is for private skip enquiries.

Find the address week instead of requesting an on-demand slot

The annual round runs from late January to the end of March, with the week varying by address. The 2026 round has passed. Use council’s address information when the next calendar is available; an old week is not an upcoming booking. The council FAQ says an on-demand hard-rubbish collection is not available. Put items out by Sunday evening before the address week, no earlier than one week ahead. Late material may be left behind.

Three volume categories sit behind the five sorting piles

The main service page gives 3 m³ of hard waste, including mattresses and e-waste, 3 m³ of metals and 3 m³ of bundled branches. Sort hard waste, metals, electronics, mattresses and branches into distinct piles for collection. That sorting instruction does not create five independent three-cubic-metre allowances. The FAQ uses different unlimited-metal wording; this guide follows the stricter 3 m³ metal cap in the main service instructions. Confirm with council before relying on a larger metal load.

Measure branches and individual metal items separately

Metal items and whitegoods have published limits of 1.5 m and 50 kg per item, with fridge doors removed. The list allows ten timber pieces but not fencing. Branches are limited to twenty bundles, each no longer than 1.5 m and 200 mm wide. Straight clean tree limbs are described separately: 75–200 mm diameter, side branches removed and maximum 1.5 m length. A loose garden heap is not equivalent to the specified bundled collection.

Keep prohibited materials away from the recycling streams

Batteries, solar panels, gas bottles, asbestos and construction rubble are excluded. Sorting an appliance into the metal pile does not make its removable battery an accepted item. When the annual round cannot take the timing or material, use a transfer station or seek a private-bin assessment. Check the item and load conditions first; the three published council volume categories do not set a private operator’s weight allowance.

Choose a skip permit period suited to the property use

Registered bin companies use the public-placement route where private placement is not possible. Council publishes fees including GST of $74 for residential placement up to seven days, $150 for building placement up to three months and $500 for commercial placement from three to twelve months. The application requires an ABN and $20 million insurance valid for the whole period. Apply and pay online, then comply with the issued siting conditions, reflective tape, night hazard lights and removal by expiry.

Outside the round, follow the private transfer-station directory

Coldstream, Montrose, Wesburn and Lysterfield transfer stations are listed by council as privately managed. The Lysterfield detail identifies Cleanaway at 840 Wellington Road and links its acceptance and charge information. Check the destination before taking a mixed load; the directory does not establish one municipal gate price. For a private skip, first describe whether the waste is furniture, metal, branches or rubble, then confirm access and placement permission at the actual address.

For the private-bin alternative, compare measured skip sizes and Melbourne skip placement permission. Check the referral service-area guide and confirm delivery with the responding provider. Return to the Melbourne council comparison for another municipality.

Questions about this collection

Can I book hard rubbish outside the annual round?

The council FAQ says an on-demand hard-rubbish booking is not available. The scheduled annual address week is the council pathway; a transfer station is a separate alternative.

Do five sorting piles mean five separate volume allowances?

No. The main page sets three volume categories: hard waste, metals and bundled branches. Mattresses and e-waste are separated for recycling within the hard-waste category.

When is the next address collection?

The 2026 annual round has passed. Check the council address lookup when the next calendar is available; do not use an old week as an upcoming date.

Can fence timber go with the ten timber pieces?

The collection excludes fencing. The ten-piece timber allowance does not remove that exclusion.

Is the $74 skip permit suitable for a three-month building job?

No. Council publishes separate categories: residential up to seven days at $74 and building placement up to three months at $150, including GST.

Who manages the local transfer stations?

Council describes Coldstream, Montrose, Wesburn and Lysterfield as privately managed. Use its directory to reach each facility before taking a load.
