Hard Rubbish Knox: Bookings, Items and Disposal
In Knox, the day you reserve hard rubbish changes the collection week. The council also counts mattresses and bases as separate pieces. Plan those two details before a moving-day clean-out.
Rules and charges checked 14 October 2026. Local Skip Bins Melbourne is an independent referral service, not affiliated with Knox council or its collection contractor. Book council hard rubbish through the Knox council collection route. This page’s quote form is for private skip enquiries.
Book early in the week for the next collection week
Eligible households receive two hard-rubbish collections per financial year. A Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday booking schedules the following week; Thursday through Sunday schedules the week after that. Collection runs between Monday 6 am and Friday 6 pm. Make the reservation before moving items onto the nature strip. The council page says the preceding weekend and the linked brochure says no earlier than two days before the week starts. Businesses and private-waste properties do not gain eligibility by using this guide.

Cancel by Friday afternoon rather than moving the pile later
The cancellation cutoff is 2 pm on the Friday before the collection week. After that time, the booking still counts toward the two annual collections. To move the date, cancel in time and make another reservation. Do not leave the first pile out and assume the online balance changes with it. Allow enough time to recheck the new week and tell anyone helping with the clean-out when the items may go outside.

A mattress and base use the two-piece limit
Knox allows two mattress/bed-base pieces in total, not two complete sets. The brochure caps ordinary furniture at 1.5 m and 30 kg and names exceptions for mattress/base and fridge arrangements. Fridge doors must be removed. Laptops, computers, TVs and other listed e-waste are accepted, while batteries are excluded. Separate the batteries before setting out devices. The published item limits are useful even though the accessible page and brochure do not confirm one aggregate cubic-metre pile allowance.

Keep the timber exception separate from fencing
The flyer permits ten timber pieces within its length/weight limits, two tied carpet rolls up to 1.5 m and suitably wrapped glass. It refuses gates, fencing, trellis, pallets, plasterboard, spa baths, tyres, car parts, paint, chemicals, gas bottles and asbestos. A few permitted timber pieces do not turn a renovation strip-out into council hard rubbish. If the load contains several different refused materials, describe each to the chosen disposal service instead of labelling the whole load household furniture.
Only the skip provider applies for public placement
A wholly private-property bin does not use Knox’s public-land permit. Accredited providers pay $563 annually, renewed in September, and $58 per placement for a maximum seven days. The one-off route is $196 per placement for the same maximum and requires at least fourteen days notice, a location diagram and $20 million public-liability insurance. Approval of new accreditation can take fourteen days; instant placement notification is a feature after registration. Extensions require another application rather than leaving the bin beyond the original permission.
Wantirna South has a privately operated transfer facility
Knox Transfer Station and Recycling Facility is at 251 George Street, Wantirna South. The council facility page links the operator’s charges and accepted-material information. Use that route for an item-specific check, not an assumption of free disposal. The pickup rules and the transfer-station rules are separate: something excluded from the booked collection can still require a charge or another specialist destination. Get that answer before loading a trailer or asking a provider to include the disposal in a quote.
For the private-bin alternative, compare measured skip sizes and Melbourne skip placement permission. Check the referral service-area guide and confirm delivery with the responding provider. Return to the Melbourne council comparison for another municipality.
Questions about this collection
What happens if I book on Thursday?
Knox schedules Thursday–Sunday bookings for the week after next; Monday–Wednesday bookings go into the next collection week.
Are two mattresses plus their bases allowed?
No. The limit is two mattress/bed-base pieces in total, so a mattress and base already use the two-piece allowance.
Can I change the collection date online?
Cancel by Friday 2 pm before the booked week and make another booking. After the cutoff the original booking still counts toward the annual balance.
Can timber go out while fencing cannot?
Yes, the list permits up to ten timber pieces within its 1.5 m/30 kg limits but excludes gates, fencing, trellis and pallets. Keep those categories separate.
Does an accredited provider pay the one-off rate?
The council has distinct routes: $58 per seven-day placement for accredited operators, plus their annual accreditation; a one-off placement is $196.
Is Knox Transfer Station a free council tip?
It is privately operated. Use the council facility link to check the operator’s current charges and whether it accepts your particular items.
