Hard Rubbish Darebin: Bookings, Items and Disposal
Darebin has one included two-cubic-metre collection, with additional services priced from a base fee plus item charges. This guide follows the stricter council item page where published lists disagree.
Rules and charges checked 14 October 2026. Local Skip Bins Melbourne is an independent referral service, not affiliated with Darebin council or its collection contractor. Book council hard rubbish through the Darebin council collection route. This page’s quote form is for private skip enquiries.
Reserve the kerbside service before placing the orange sticker
Residential properties with council kerbside bins receive one included 2 m³ collection per financial year. Businesses and private-waste properties are outside that included service. Use council’s contracted booking route, phone or customer centre. Confirmation is followed by the brochure and orange booked sticker, and council describes a Friday SMS reminder. Current demand can mean a wait of four weeks. Set out on the preceding weekend, ready by Monday 6 am, and do not add items once collection begins.

Count paid item extras above the base collection charge
Council lists additional 2 m³ collections with a base charge of $82.30. Mattresses add $29.80 each, fridges $33.20 each and tyres $16.60 each. Check the separate e-waste charge in the booking route; no per-kilogram rate is quoted here. One base charge cannot price a pile containing several surcharge items. The inventory limit remains relevant even for a paid booking: the main service list caps mattress/base pieces at two in total and standard car tyres at four.

Follow the dedicated battery ban and ten-piece timber rule
The dedicated council item page excludes batteries of any type. This guide follows that restriction even though the contracted booking inventory uses different wording. Its timber/log limit is ten pieces up to 1.5 m long and 15 cm wide, excluding fence palings; the main page lists twelve. Use the stricter ten-piece instruction and check with council before relying on a higher count. Electronics and whitegoods have their own accepted streams, rather than treating the removed batteries as another recyclable pile.

Box small glass; do not add a renovation load
Small glass must be wrapped in a secured box marked glass, not a plastic bag. Large windows, mirrors and shower screens are excluded. The dedicated list also refuses construction/renovation material, fence panels and palings, green waste, gas bottles, fire extinguishers and liquids. Sort scrap metal, mattress/base pieces, electronics and standard tyres separately from the remaining landfill items. Different wording for individual fixtures in the main list does not establish general building-waste acceptance.
An unlimited skip contract still needs twenty-four-hour notice
A skip on a public road or council land requires permission before placement and a copy of the company’s public-liability cover. An unlimited-placement contract holder must notify council at least 24 hours ahead of each placement, with a maximum seven-day stay. Confirm the current permit charge through that application route; the linked supplier fee schedule is dated 2023/24 and is not quoted as current here. If there is no nature strip for council hard waste, ask council before choosing another spot; its service directions exclude roads, laneways and inside-fence placement.

Use the Reservoir recovery centre’s own acceptance list
Darebin Resource Recovery Centre is in Kurnai Avenue, off Henty Street, Reservoir. Council directs some rejected hard-waste items there, with fees and acceptance depending on the material. Check the centre’s list before loading a trailer. Keep a battery or chemical drop-off separate from a bulk furniture or construction quote. A private skip also needs an item-specific assessment; the included kerbside collection and the centre’s charges are different services.
For the private-bin alternative, compare measured skip sizes and Melbourne skip placement permission. Check the referral service-area guide and confirm delivery with the responding provider. Return to the Melbourne council comparison for another municipality.
Questions about this collection
Is the $82.30 paid rate the total for a fridge?
The council lists a $33.20 fridge surcharge in addition to the $82.30 base collection fee. Item extras need to be counted separately.
Can I put a battery out because the contractor lists it?
The council’s dedicated item page excludes batteries of any type. Follow that council restriction while the contractor discrepancy is unresolved.
Are ten or twelve timber pieces allowed?
The dedicated accepted-item page says ten; the main service list says twelve. Use ten conservatively and check with council before relying on the higher number.
How should broken small glass be packed?
Wrap it and place it in a secured box marked glass. The dedicated list refuses large glass and glass in plastic bags.
Can I place hard waste on a laneway or inside my fence?
The service directions exclude those locations. Where there is no nature strip, ask council before setting out rather than borrowing another council’s inside-fence option.
Does an unlimited skip contract remove the notice requirement?
No. Its holder still gives at least 24 hours notice per placement, and bins may stay for a maximum seven days.
